Old and new masters of the electronic music world come together this month at KOKO as Soundcrash rounds up three giants from the scene and pits them against three fast-rising new-comers.

Headlining the night, playing live, are Plaid, one of the very first signings to the venerable Warp stable. From their original incarnation as The Black Dog right through to today, Plaid have continued to push boundaries both musically and visually, and it’s easy to see why after nearly two decades of releases they still remain at the head of the pack. As the electronica community waits with bated breath for their latest studio album ‘Scintilli’ to drop this show is an opportunity to catch a preview of their new material for the first time.

Formally signed to the spiritual home of progressive electronic dance music Warp Records, Red Snapper have now found a new home on Lo, with a shift from live techno-esque beatery to a more Jazzy flavour that has been capturing audiences around the world since their re-emergence last year. Their hugely energetic live shows are perfected by the supreme musicianship on show and we’re well excited about seeing it again on the Soundcrash stage!

What more can be said about Luke Vibert? One of the very few acts to have been signed to both Warp and Ninja; a man who’s fans are that loyal and, well, real, that he doesn’t feel the need for Facebooks and MySpaces and the like; a man with over twenty years of fine musical production under his belt and one of the most relaxed performers we know of. Luke Vibert, aka Wagon Christ, aka Plug, aka a-whole-host-of-other-aliases is coming back to KOKO to rip it up once more.

Connecticut born and San Francisco based Eskmo is Ninja Tune’s newest signing, and the young producer couldn’t find a more suitable home for his dark, textured, bass-heavy future-funk. With his awesome debut album ‘Eskmo’ coming out on the 24th October and word already spreading about his live shows, this young beatsmith is set for big things.

Masaaki Yoshida, better known as Anchorsong to you and I, is a proponent of some of the loveliest electronic soundscapes you’ll find, anywhere. Sometimes alone with his drum-machine and keyboard, at others accompanied by a glamorous string-quartet, always a phonic treat – here’s yet one more rising star who has become a firm Soundcrash favourite over the past few months.

Finally we have Leeds’ glitchtronic outfit Stateless, who have been winning acclaim everywhere they have graced the stage in the last couple of years. Freshly signed to Ninja Tune and with a new album expected in early 2011 the only way is up for Kid Kanevil and friends.

After selling out KOKO in January, Wax Tailor is back in London with his full live band. Setting up shop a couple doors down in Camden Town’s Electric Ballroom, this French Hip Hop maestro promises to deliver another night of musical brilliance.

With the critically acclaimed worldwide success of his first two albums, Wax Tailor breaks musical barriers combining hot downtempo beats from the U.S with cultural European lyricism. With ten years on the circuit the Frenchman has carved his place on the scene with one of the best selling electronic releases of last year.

Off the back of his third album ‘In the Mood for Life’ and a sold out autumn tour under his belt, the acclaimed trip hop producer has found an eclectic new sound fusing live soul, jazz, funk and 60’s pop.

Accompanied with his four-piece live band Wax Tailor’s hot new set sees him mash up his unique brand of cinematic hip-hop electronica with turntablistic samples from the likes of Nina Simone, in his own inimitable fashion that is set to electrify the ballroom.

From their original incarnation as The Black Dog through to their latest studio album ‘Scintilli’, Plaid continue to push boundaries both musically and visually, and it’s easy to see why after nearly two decades of releases they still remain at the head of the pack.

Part of a very elite group of artists to have been released albums on both Warp and Ninja Tune, Luke Vibert is a true hero of electronic music. Countless releases, timeless tunes and multiple remixes (along with multiple aliases) have secured this man’s place in the collective consciousness of two generations of music lovers. Another true legend, Luke’s presence in KOKO on this fine night is practically mandatory!

Previously known as Zilla, King Cannibal‘s name has become synonymous with spine-shattering sub-frequencies in the last year, his debut LP ‘Let The Night Roar’ on Ninja Tune was released in November to critical acclaim across the board from dubstep and electronica critics alike. Dubbed by DJ Mag as ‘The modern master of satanic sub frequencies’

Following on from a simply immense show at KOKO in April, and 2 of the hottest performances at July’s Soundwave festival in Croatia, Soundcrash have invited two of the UK’s live-music behemoths back to Camden for round two of their celebration of musicianship…

Forget every rule you’ve ever been taught about live music. Forget every outmoded notion of what it is to be a ‘live’ band. Forget even what you think you think ‘live music’ actually means. What you are left with is The Bays.

They only perform live, they never rehearse, they don’t have a set-list and they couldn’t ever do the same performance twice. It’s all about the moment – an experience or an event that exists between the band and the audience for one time only. It is this strictly adhered to ethos that has taken The Bays to the very top of their game, and put them on the verge of redefining what live music in C21 will become.
www.thebays.com

With their 1996 debut Prince Blimey, Red Snapper’s savage display of traditional jazz instrumentation in a contemporary context — and, most importantly, the band’s ability to pull it off live — was largely responsible for the influx of dance artists fusing acoustic instruments with electronic sounds. They distinguished themselves from the outset by performing live, not relying on studio wizardry to reach their audience. During a period when most “live” music consisted of artists sweating over a sequencer in a flightcase, here was a group of gifted musicians who took their studio material and bettered it on stage. After a seven year hiatus, and with the new album ‘Pale Blue Dot’ heralding a return to the ‘fuckoffjazz’ form their fans know and love, Red Snapper are back!
www.myspace.com/redsnapperofficial

Jon Kennedy has to be one of the hardest working musicians you could come across, utilising all the new forms of self-promotion that the internet offers. Having signed to Tru Thouhts after Mr Scruff played his tunes on Juice FM, then switching to Grand Central recordings in 2002, he has taken the art of production and blended it perfectly with live musicianship to bring you the Jon Kennedy band you will hear tonight. Expect deep bass, irresistable grooves and a true musical interaction with the crowd in this DJ/Drummer/Producer’s live offering.
www.myspace.com/jonkennedy

London-based Tokyo child Anchorsong makes great music! Plain and simple. Heavy, technical beats laden with synth-harmonies and moving chord-changes, all set to the beautiful sound (and sight in this case!) of his all-girl string-quartet, he came reccomended to us by DJ Krush and the high-accolade is easily matched by his pure, raw talent.
www.myspace.com/anchorsong

What would be the result if you were to apply hacking techniques to music making, and then get all dada-ist about it? The answer: Dadahack. Often starting their works with readymades such as a gameboy or speak and spell, and twist and burn them and turn them upside down and write on them until they no longer sound, look like, or even are what they were in the beginning. It’s Underworld meets Röyksopp behind the bikeshed bitching about how Trax records got on the guest list. It’s all clinical riffs and expansive keyboard solos underpinned by a good solid fumping chunk, and their track ‘Hello’ will be featured on a Sony Audio advert from 29th September; A perfect addition to the evenings faire.
http://www.myspace.com/dadahack

Six years after parting ways to pursue separate projects, Anti-Pop Consortium have reunited and recorded their fourth and quite possibly best album, “Fluorescent Black”. APC, who took Hip Hop by surprise with their 2000 debut, “Tragic Epilogue,” proceeded to make a name for themselves as one of the genre’s premiere boundary-pushers with “Shopping Carts Crashing” (2000) and cemented their status as luminaries with “Arrhythmia” (2002).

Widely regarded as cutting-edge innovators to a broad spectrum of listeners including b-boy purists, experimental electronic fans and indie rockers, Anti-Pop Consortium’s return is major news. The group has been praised for their stream-of consciousness lyrics, their ability to give seemingly unrelated word clusters hidden meaning, and their sonic backdrops that provide the perfect canvas for their lyrical paintings.

With the new album out now on Big Dada, it’s time for the quartet of Beans, M. Sayyid, Earl Blaize, and High Priest to return to the live arena with a show at London’s Scala. If their work in the studio has left critics breathless, their live shows is set to permanently alter people’s conceptions of what a hip-hop show can mean, few, if any other group of MCs can hope to match the collective’s left-field adventurousness, lyrical dexterity or sonic vision.
