1st August 2011, Ilmenau, Germany:- BACH Technology is making its MusicDNA™ ID audio identification technology available to anyone seeking to enhance their products with music recognition features. BACH, the company behind the innovative MusicDNA™ format – the successor to the MP3 unveiled at Midem 2010 – offers a fast, robust, full-featured and most importantly, a very affordable music recognition solution:

Identification is made within 10 seconds of a track playing

Results are drawn from a database of more than 8 million songs – and the database is growing daily to an expected depth of more than 13 million songs by the end of 2011

Enhanced metadata – including genre, tempo, mood, instruments played, and more – can be returned, alongside basic details such as artist name and song title, thanks to BACH’s unique MusicDNA™ fingerprinting technology

Anyone from developers to media companies and hardware manufacturers can now use this service in any number of innovative ways:

Smartphone and tablet apps enabling users to identify music in clubs, bars, restaurants or on the move

Integration within car audio systems, radios, TVs and DVD players to detect songs played in adverts, movies, TV shows and other broadcast media

Media monitoring, to monitor all radio or TV channels and report exactly when a brand’s commercials appear

“Metadata-cleaning” of music files on users’ personal hard disks, where metadata could be cleaned by correct identification by MusicDNA™ ID of the song and the submission of correct metadata.

Games developers, social networks, streaming music services and other online platforms could all integrate audio recognition via MusicDNA™ ID

BACH is already working with a number of partners who will be bringing audio recognition to their customers within the next few months.

Said Stefan Kohlmeyer, BACH Technology CEO: “Music recognition apps are exploding right now, but the possibilities of this technology are still to be fully exploited. And if you want to get into this space, current options in the market are either prohibitively expensive, or they simply aren’t reliable or powerful enough. Our MusicDNA™ ID service represents the ideal choice for anyone who wants to bring music recognition to their customers. We’re excited to see what can be done with our technology in broadcast, mobile, online, in cars, and beyond. Who knows what ideas our new customers will come up with?”

Facebook, iPhone and iPad apps were launched today, which demonstrate the abilities of the software. The iPhone and iPad apps return enhanced metadata – including details on Genre, Mood, Colour and Percussiveness – alongside artist and song title information once a track has been identified.

Inquiries about implementing the MusicDNA™ ID system should be should be sent to Stefan Kohlmeyer (Stefan [at] bachtechnology.com) or Dagfinn Bach (Dagfinn [at] bachtechnology.com).

Norwegian MP3 Shop Beat.No Licenses MusicDNA To Identify Tracks Broadcast From Variety Of Radio Stations

BACH, the leading provider of technology and applications for the digital music market, has licensed its MusicDNA technology to the largest Chinese language infotainment web portal Sina and Norwegian music service Beat.no.

Launched at Midem 2010, MusicDNA is the name given by BACH Technology to their audio and metadata technologies. BACH has developed a suite of MusicDNA powered applications that can be integrated into existing music services.

Sina (Nasdaq:Sina), which has nearly 100m registered users, first launched their music service in 2008, attracting over 20 million users to date. Sina Music will upgrade its streaming and community services in September, with over a million licensed tracks and several new MusicDNA powered search & recommendation tools.

These include the Music Mood Pad, which can suggest songs to suit the listener’s current temperament; MusicDNA profiles which can integrate with social networking profiles to automatically generate personalized playlists and search and recommendation based on seed songs or artists.

Meanwhile Norwegian MP3 shop Beat.no has become the first company to license BACH’s new MusicDNA ID audio recognition technology – to launch an exciting new feature enabling fans to purchase music they hear via a variety of Norwegian radio stations. Beat.no will use the technology to monitor the stations in real-time, with listeners texting in to receive a link to the track for immediate purchase.

MusicDNA ID uses audio waveform fingerprints to identify individual songs or albums regardless of the source, format, or tag information. MusicDNA ID is able to identify songs from a sample just a few seconds long and has been proven to have a recognition rate of over 99%.

Xie Guo Min, General Manager of Sina Music: “The user experience of Sina Music has improved with the cooperation of BACH and their MusicDNA technology. We are looking forward to working with BACH to increase revenues from personalized music recommendation services.”

Stefan Kohlmeyer, Bach Technology CEO “We are extremely happy that Sina Music have, after a lengthy and in depth assessment, chosen to use our MusicDNA products and work with BACH as a technology partner. We are extremely excited at how much Sina Music has utilized our technology to improve the user experience and create revenue generating personalized music services.”

Progress has continued meanwhile with the development of the MusicDNA media extension, with a service enabling fans to upgrade personal music libraries and download the MusicDNA player expected to launch at the end of the year.

BACH Technology the leading provider of technology and applications for the digital music market today unveiled the next stage in the evolution of digital music: MusicDNA.

The successor to the MP3, the MusicDNA media extension enables music fans to access the wide range of music-related content they want alongside the music itself – from lyrics, artwork and tour dates to blog posts, videos and twitter feeds.

This additional content appears alongside the MP3 in a convenient and fully customisable App-driven player that is freely available to download. The content automatically updates whenever the player is connected to the internet, ensuring fans always receive the most up to date information alongside their music.

Crucially, only legitimately purchased tracks will dynamically update, and pirated versions will remain as static files, giving fans a tangible benefit in purchasing MusicDNA files. A first for digital music, this will provide the expanding download market with a much welcome boost.

Best of all, fans can customise their MusicDNA files after purchase, further enriching their music experience and making plain old MP3 feel decidedly last decade.

A recent report by Forrester Research, Inc. argued that the future of the recordings business lies in allowing fans greater interaction and customisability with their music files. If the likes of iTunes LP represent the first small step along this path, then MusicDNA – incorporating unrivalled user-customisability and inter-platform compatibility – represents a giant leap.

Already proving a hit with the music business, MusicDNA enables rights holders to up-sell concert tickets, merchandise, music videos and other exclusive content – either purchasable alongside the track itself or at any future point.

MusicDNA launches with support from across the value chain, from rights holders, and distributors through to digital service providers and retailers. Partners on board for the Beta launch this spring include:

• Independent labels including Beggars Group (UK), Tommy Boy Entertainment (US), Delta Records (US) and Amiata Records (Italy)
• R2G (China), operators of Wawawa, China’s largest online independent music store, and featured store for Microsoft’s Windows Media Player in China
• Recast Media (Canada), the personalised digital news and entertainment service
• InProdicon (Sweden) Scandinavia’s largest distributor and service provider
• REBEAT Digital (Germany) digital music distributor to more than 300 download stores
• PeoplesMusicStore (UK), the UK’s unique, user-curated music download service.
• CatchMedia (US) whose ‘cloud’ music service allows users to access and play their music across multiple devices.

BACH is in the midst of talks with potential partners from across all sectors of the business, including the major labels and leading digital service providers such as 24-7 Entertainment, with further announcements expected shortly.

Rollout will be staggered over 2010, with the first beta versions available around Easter and the full commercial rollout expected over summer.

Said Tom Silverman, Founder and CEO, Tommy Boy Entertainment: “MusicDNA will be a boon for artists and fans as it dynamically connects them long after purchase. It is a boon for fans as it can offer multiple levels of artist stuff based on the fan’s passion level. Now they can have immediate access to all of an artist’s offerings easily and in one place…the place of purchase.

“It’s a boon for labels because this high-value consumer experience is not cloneable yet highly viral and gives them full content and pricing flexibility. Their imagination is their only limit… If MP3′s were the cassette, MusicDNA will be the CD. What took you so long?”

Commented Simon Wheeler, Director of Digital, Beggars Group: “Beggars is supportive of any new initiative that looks to add value to our music and deliver more value and information to the fans who support us, being based on open standards the Bach implementation of MPEG-7 gives us an exciting opportunity to deliver a far richer experience to fans that goes well beyond the dumb file.”

Said Charles Webster, Director of Product & Marketing, Delta Leisure Group PLC: “This innovative development from Bach Technology is a gateway to the future, and the Delta Leisure Group is proud to be associated with it.”

Commented Matteo Silva, CEO of Amiata Records and Skeye: “MusicDNA is a wonderful human touch in this cold digital world and an important step towards full integration of legality and uniqueness of information, leaving piracy behind.”

Said Inge Severin, Founder and Partner, InProdicon: “We at InProdicon are grateful for having the opportunity to work with Bach Technology – especially as they posses a unique combination of the highest technological knowledge and a broad, deep, understanding of music and its dynamics; This guarantees that not only will MusicDNA be reliable technology wise, but most importantly it will also be a great experience for the Consumers.”

Commented Boaz Ben-Yaacov, CTO Catch Media “Bach’s MusicDNA will help create a seamless quality experience for consumers to listen to their music collection across the cloud as their technology increases accuracy and allows consumers to discover new music similar to their own collection”

Said Stefan Kohlmeyer, Bach Technology CEO: “Twenty years on from the initial development of the MP3, it is time for digital audio to once again evolve. Just as vinyl gave way to the CD and the CD to MP3, it is time for the MP3 to pass the baton onto MusicDNA.

“If we can look beyond the MP3 then consumers, forward thinking artists, labels, device manufacturers, digital music services and even brands all stand to benefit from a music format purpose built for our digital age.”

BACH’s MusicDNA™ audio analysers are able to extract a huge amount of data from media files, providing information on a track’s mood, tempo, density, instrumentation and even ‘colour’. This metadata is then used to build up a much more complete picture of the audio file which powers everything from sophisticated playlist generation and search and recommendation tools, to enhanced user profiles for social networking and intelligently targeted advertising solutions.

Whilst long viewed with suspicion by content owners, China’s emergence as an economic powerhouse has been mirrored by the rise of legitimate music services in the region. With potentially hundreds of millions of new consumers, the Far Eastern market has the potential to transform the fortunes of the music industry worldwide.

BACH’s MusicDNA™ technology will enable Aceway to provide their users with a better music recommendation service, as well as enhanced social networking features.

R2G, whose store Wawawa has a catalogue of more than 1 million music tracks, will integrate MusicDNA™ into their service to provide an advanced search and recommendation service that can unlock revenue from dormant repertoire.

For Beeku, BACH’s technology will form the backbone for providing China Mobile’s (MPEG-7 tagged) ring tone database and sales channel. Finally MusicDNA™ will enable Cloud‘s customers, supermarkets, bars and other public spaces, to further refine the music they broadcast and generate playlists based on attributes such as mood, energy and even the electro-acoustic properties of music.

Furthermore China Mobile has appointed BACH Technology as the official reseller of their ring back tones and as an agent for their newly launched apps store. Unlike Apple’s Apps Store, developers can’t submit their programmes direct but must go through an appointed agent, such as BACH, instead.

Stefan Kohlmeyer, Bach Technology CEO said “China is an extremely challenging music market with great potential. We are therefore very happy to equip our partners with the latest technology in their effort to turn consumers to legitimate music services ”

Founded in 2007 BACH is a fast growing music technology company with offices in Norway, Germany and China. BACH’s technological successes are a result of a close strategic partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT), a proven and trusted technical research institution in the music industry.

About Bach Technology

BACH Technology is the leading provider of technology and applications for the digital music market. A fast growing music technology company with offices in Norway, Germany and China, BACH’s successes stem from a team who have been involved with the development of digital music since 1986.

Company founder Dagfinn Bach is one digital music’s early pioneers, while Bach’s technology partner is Germany’s Fraunhofer IDMT (Institute for Digital Media Technology), a spin off from the Fraunhofer IIS (Institute for Integrated Circuits), where the MP3 was developed.

Investors include Karlheinz Brandenburg, who invented the MP3, and 247 Inc. the company of Shigeo Maruyama, former CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, while CEO Stefan Kohlmeyer is a veteran of German media giant Bertelsmann.

BACH’s core technology, the MusicDNA™ Analyser, employs a complex but completely automated process to create extensive and consistent music metadata, including analysis of a track’s mood, tempo, density, instrumentation and even ‘colour’. This metadata, in essence the MusicDNA™, allows for a much more detailed description of media files.

BACH has developed several applications that take full advantage of this metadata, powering search and recommendation tools, automatically creating sophisticated playlists, allowing users to compare music profiles on networking sites and enabling advertisers to intelligently target listeners based on parameters such as the mood of the music they are currently playing.

In contrast to collaborative filtering techniques, which tend to promote current releases, MusicDNA™ powered music services offer users a much deeper music experience, breathing life into back catalogues and opening up exciting new revenues streams for content owners.

Online music services already signed up to use BACH technology include Simfy.de, Catch Media, 1Boss, and People’s Music Store. Agreements with major international music services are set to be announced soon.

BACH is currently developing an offline version of their MusicDNA™ technology, which will allow listeners to enjoy the benefits of MusicDNA™ wherever they go, and expect to announce full details in early 2010.

The BACH MusicDNA™ Analyser is available as API Webservice that can be installed on the servers of the customer or used externally from the BACH server cloud. Unlike older technology, BACH technology is entirely based on the open standards MPEG-7 and XML. BACH is the only company offering full end-to-end MPEG-7 integration, ensuring seamless interoperability and compatibility with external programs and systems.
